Today is a very special day! It’s my daddy’s birthday!
Honestly, I never realized it until I was engaged that I was a daddy’s girl. I’m sorry to say, but I feel like I took for granted the relationship we had when I was in my teens/very early 20’s. My dad was a hard worker, and wasn’t always there for every track meet or cheerleading competition… but it was all for the benefit of his family. We wouldn’t be where we are now if it wasn’t for him. I can’t thank him enough and be prouder that I get to call him Dad.
I moved from my home in Northern California to finish my education in Southern California 8 years ago. I only saw him a handful of times a year. Now that we live back in the same city, I get to see him everyday and I couldn’t love it any more. I love seeing him as a grandfather (Devyn calls him Opa) – he is most definitely still young at heart!
I remember getting ready to take my first step down the aisle. As excited as I was… I was shaking. I was about to start the rest of my life. He was about to “give me away”. But he just smiled at me, and confidently led me down to the front of the sanctuary. It’s my favorite walk with him yet 🙂
We did a parent’s appreciation after we said our vows. It was a way tothank them for everything they had done for us to be able to embark on this new adventure. We lit the unity candle, which is to this day one of my favorite items to include in a wedding ceremony: flames lit by our mothers were used to come together and create new energy. Then we presented each with a bouquet of flowers. I still try to remind myself daily that I should show how thankful I am for them more often.
I don’t even remember what we talked about during our Father-Daughter Dance. There was some laughing. There was a little bit of choking up. We danced to Butterfly Kisses by Bob Carlisle. We had been listening to that song since I was about 8. It was so special to me, I’m so glad I have this picture to remember it by, especially since I get to see him from an angle I wasn’t able to experience at the moment it was taken!
Tonight we’re going to a delicious and relaxing dinner. He didn’t want to do anything too fancy – just good food, good wine, and good company. My idea of a perfect night. 🙂
Happy birthday, Dad. Love, Your Little Girl.
