The world is kind of a scary place right now. The heinous things people are possessed to do seriously blow my mind. When the attacks on Paris happened, I felt a bit of hope escape my body. What have we come to? I was in tears. Not because I knew anyone personally in Paris but because I thought, “This is the world my daughter is growing up in. This is the world that I will bring future children into.” It’s an overwhelming thing to be a parent already, but to add the knowledge that no matter how good you do, no matter how much you try to protect them, you cannot control the actions of others. It isn’t just international terrorism that makes me sad, but domestic terrorism as well. Not a day goes by that I don’t hear about a murder, a shooting, a fallen cop or a member of society taken advantage of.
But in the midst of this… there actually IS hope.
My hope is that there are those of us who see these injustices, these crimes against humanity and instead of meeting it with anger and hate, we face our situation with love. Not that we have to love those that are doing wrong, but that instead of fighting violence with violence, we hold fast to our values and fight for them with peace. I hope that we remember to love our neighbors, to treat others the way we wish to be treated, to realize that just because we don’t see something the same way the other person does, it doesn’t mean one of us is evil, but that we are different. And that is actually what makes our world so beautiful.
I hope to raise my children to have courage & be kind. That has been my motto since I saw Cinderella in March of 2015. Despite all the wrongs that was done to her, Cindrella held her head high, always took the honorable road though it was the hardest, and even forgave her stepmother & stepsisters for how they had treated her. What poise. What an inspiration.
Today is a day in which we remember and honor a great man who fought for what was right with the utmost dignity. I hope we never forget why was and still is such a revolutionary.
In honor of his spirit… I choose love.
